Over the past decade, microparticulates have been replacing high molecular weight retention aids. Microparticulates
give papermakers the possibility to upgrade retention using combinations of flocculants and microparticles
to obtain wet end flexibility. This allows our customers to increase productivity and paper quality.
AMCOL Paper Technology
offers the AccoForm® product line—a range of high purity sodium bentonites, specifically
mined and processed for use in microparticle retention aids. Best performance is achieved when used
in conjunction with a medium to high molecular weight cationic or non-ionic flocculant, although branched
or highly cross-linked polyacrylamides are preferred. Typically the polymer solution should be added
to the pulp suspension before the last point of high shear with the bentonite slurry being added just
prior to the head-box. Sodium bentonite RDF systems are less sensitive to conductivity changes and are
effective in both high and low pH environments.
Benefits of Using Bentonite-Based Retention Systems
- Excellent drainage and retention response
- Cost-efficiency
- Exceptional RDF performance combined with conventional polymer flocculant or starch
- Low impact on system electrochemistry (low charge density)
- Effluent quality improvement
- "Knock-on benefits"—pitch control, general stock/sludge dewatering & filtration
efficiency
AccoForm®
A number of retention aid systems have been developed. While the use of each system will affect retention,
drainage and formation properties to some extent, not all will necessarily be to the positive advantage
of the papermaker. In fact, a compromise has to be reached between the process efficiency benefits derived
from improved retention and drainage and product quality as determined by formation. As trends in papermaking
have moved towards faster and more efficient paper machines, with twin wire forming, high turbulence
dilution head-boxes, more closed water circuits and higher wet-end conductivities, dual component microparticle
systems in particular have come to the fore, offering simultaneous improvements in retention, drainage
and formation.
